In August of 2005, we contracted with Hughes
Co/Greenhomes of America to perform an energy
audit on our house. As part of the
process, Hughes Co used infra red cameras to
locate areas lacking insulation and they also
performed an air loss analysis. The
results of the testing indicated that our house
was lacking insulation in the ceilings and in
some of the external walls. The draft
test revealed that the wall behind our refrigerator
did was lacking dry wall (it was just studs)
which allowed air from the both the basement
and attic to flow into the kitchen.
In December of 2005, Hughes Co returned and
blew in 18" of R-23 insulation into our
ceilings and insulated 60 square feet of our
floors. Also, as part of the
project, they replaced our two existing, aging
boilers with a new computer controlled Trinity
furnace and hot water on demand system. Of
course, they fixed the wall behind the refrigerator
too!
The results of the project earned our house
the NY Energy Star certification and dropped
our energy bills by 33%.
